Many people don't understand what Medicaid really is and it is because of this that they find themselves wondering if they or their family members are eligible for this government health insurance program. There are many requirements for Medicaid eligibility and most adults do not meet the criteria to be on Medicaid.

Medicaid is primarily a program set up to help the extremely low income segment of the population that are unable to pay their health care premiums. Medicaid is most widely associated with, help for children not yet 18, emancipated, or still living at home as well as up through the post natal exams of pregnant women.

Coverage beyond this group of individuals does not exist, unless the income requirements that have yet to be met. In these instances, supplemental health insurance plan will take effect for children of families, 17 or younger, that have above poverty income, but are not part of any work related health insurance plan. Medicaid has a safety net plan to cover such children and will continue the child's health insurance coverage until they reach the age of 18, at which time they are considered an adult and no longer eligible.

This extension to Medicaid might be called something different, depending where you reside, but you will easily be able to locate this plan simply by going through your local Medicaid office. If you are denied by Medicaid for any of its benefits, all the necessary paperwork will go directly to the recommended office, but this only happens if the income guidelines are not met and no other reason, regardless of what you might have been lead to believe.

Medicaid is a system that is designed to help those in need but does very little to help anyone besides children and pregnant women. While there are many government programs in place many of them do not apply to the general population which leaves a lot of people struggling to pay high health insurance premiums or becoming uninsured and becoming a burden to us all. Either way the government needs to find better ways to address the growing health care crisis within the United States. Health care issues are everyone's concern because those who are uninsured cost those of us who are a lot of extra money. The system can not reach a balance until everyone is paying their own way either with their health insurance benefits or with cash. It is the only way to stop the rising costs of health care in America.
